About Us

How it all began...

In my 10 years’ working as an optometrist, I have encountered many situations where children have often felt scared and nervous about undergoing an eye test, especially if it is their first time.

Naturally, it can be quite daunting and at times an upsetting experience.

In these types of situations, it is not always easy knowing what to do as a parent.

I have always had a passion for helping people and this is also why I became an optometrist.

After observing how children felt about their visit to the opticians, I was inspired to write a book in the form of a mini adventure that would hopefully make the experience more positive, and eventually create a series of books for similar life experiences.

As writing a children’s book is not something that I’ve done before, I decided to enrol on a course to learn more about the process, which was both challenging and fun.

For the first book, I spent some time gathering feedback from children, parents and practitioners in the field.

This was to gain a better and broader understanding of the types of concerns raised by children and the challenges they faced, to ensure that they left the opticians feeling less anxious and with a smile on their face.

This book series is primarily aimed at children aged 3-6 and I came up with the cheeky twins, Felix and Felicity, as my main characters to make the story more engaging and relatable.

After coming up with a concept, the next step was to bring the characters and story to life. The challenge here being that drawing is not one of my stronger skills!

I hired an amazing character designer and illustrator, Lauren Scott, to transform my ideas and sketches into the great visuals that you’ll find in our books and on the website.

Whether our first book becomes a fun bedtime story or you come across it in a waiting room before a test, I hope that it delivers in its goal to spark a sense of adventure and hopefully help towards making your child’s visit to the opticians a pleasant and positive experience.

We are also in the process of creating the next book, in our health and well-being series, where our cheeky chimps Felix and Felicity will be visiting the dentist. Sign up to our mailing list to stay in touch and continue the journey!
